Rutland and Stamford Mercury (January 2019)

Tough game today against an emotional Rutland Thunders team, who played for a teammate who sadly passed away recently. Such class shown from both clubs, the parents but mainly from the players on court who played with such maturity, respect and sportsmanship.

A great advertisement for sport and it's power to mould incredible young men.

You are all a credit to Basketball 🏀 and you should be so proud of yourselves and Usman would have the biggest smile!

Jeremy Beswick visits a basketball club slam-dunking its way through the European youth game.

If you're a youngster in and around the Welland Valley who wants to play a team sport, then you're very well served if rugby, football or cricket is your thing. But what if it isn't? Until recently there was little choice on offer, as very few local sides offer something different from the 'big three' in a competitive league format.  The good news is there's now another option for under 14 to 18 year olds in the form of the Rutland Thunders basketball club.

Not only are they local, as they are based in Oakham, they're an impressive outfit as well.  Their under 16s team recently travelled to Finland for a tournament against no less than 250 other sides and cam home champions... My daughter and I would like to thank John for his time (so far) and the enjoyment we have had playing basketball (although we still think he makes up the rules as he goes along), the laughter and the new experiences, like a dislocated finger!

We look forward to being able to return to the ladies basketball sessions soon and if we can help in any way in sourcing funding please let us know.

Dear Rutland Thunders.
I simply wanted to express our thanks and appreciation to all the organisers and coaches of Rutland Thunders. Thank you for all the time and effort that you all put into coaching our son and the basketball team. My son has moderate Autism, and he is developing in sportsmanship and self esteem under your coaching and guidance. My son is having a great time. Thank you very much.
